Rettet den Regenwald has just started an urgent email action, following the arrest of community leader and village mayor Muhammad Rusdi in Jambi Province, Indonesia.
Muhammad Rusdi has been detained in police custody since 28th January. 500 villagers are camped outside the police station demanding his release. They are very concerned for his safety, following reports of him having been mistreated during interrogation.
The notorious company Sinar Mas is believed to be behind his arrest. Sinar Mas is one of the biggest palm oil and pulp and paper companies in South-east Asia and is also understood to be behind the fire-bombing of a village in Riau, Sumatra last December.
Rusdi and other farmers from the village Karang Mendapo demand the return of their land which Sinar Mas illegally appropriated, logged and turned into an oil palm plantation years ago. Villagers have been threatened and persecuted.
Please go to www.regenwald.org/international/englisch/protestaktion.php?id=359 in order to send protest emails to the Indonesian embassies in the UK and US. You can find the email addresses of the embassies on that webpage in case you would prefer to send persnalised emails. Many thanks!
Almuth
