FAIRFIELD -- With the help of one of the most recognizable rock bands in history, Mayor Ed Malloy plans to turn Fairfield into one of America's most self-sustainable cities.

All it will take is hard work, superior planning and some good vibrations.

In a press conference Friday at the Fairfield Art and Convention Center, Malloy and Beach Boy Mike Love announced a "green" Beach Boys concert Labor Day at the Fairfield Middle School.

Love, who will be declared Fairfield's energy czar for the day, also will announce details of Fairfield's green strategic plan during the concert.

"It seems energy independence is on the lips of everyone," said Malloy, who recently was selected as one of the 15 greenest mayors in America by the Microsoft portal MSN.com. "It's important for creating a sustainable future for our children and our grandchildren and beyond."

The plan is being developed to accomplish three major goals:

* Creating a sustainable culture;

* Creating jobs and opportunity for sustainable investments; and

* Creating a sustainable community design.

An $80,000 grant from Iowa's Office of Energy Independence will help city officials get a start on the plan. Malloy said it consists of 40 objectives, which Love will announce during the concert. Some of the objectives include publishing a household guide for sustainability, reducing citywide energy use 40 percent by 2020, reducing waste 95 percent by 2020 and reducing greenhouse gas emissions 40 percent by 2030.

The idea of a green concert promoting Fairfield's plans came from Love, who has been promoting a national campaign for energy independence.

The Beach Boys concert will be one of the country's first all-green rock concerts, using biofuel generators for electricity. The event also will feature a "bike to the concert" initiative to cut car usage, demonstrations of clean energy products and a variety of educational booths.

"Unless we act locally and do the type of things Mayor Malloy is spearheading, I don't see how the planet can sustain itself," Love said. "One of the best resources we have in the United States is the middle of it. We could be completely self-sufficient, like Brazil is, in terms of biofuels."

Love has been meditating for 40 years and makes regular visits to the Maharishi University of Management campus. He recently headlined the "Changes Begin Within" benefit concert in New York City with Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Jerry Seinfeld, Donovan, Sheryl Crow, Eddie Vedder and Ben Harper. The concert raised more than $1 million for the David Lynch Foundation to teach a million at-risk youth to meditate.

The Beach Boys' concert will be at 2 p.m. Sept. 7 at the outdoor field at Fairfield Middle School and will begin with an opening act by The Nadas at 12:30 p.m. Gates will open at noon.
