Company marks start of work on energy plant in Camden
CHUCK BARTELS Associated Press Writer 11:01 AM CDT, August 13, 2009 CAMDEN, Ark. (AP) - Phoenix Renewable Energy has marked the start of work on a $180 million wood pellet plant.
State and area officials gathered Thursday at the Port of Camden, a site largely dormant since the 1970s.
The plant will employ up to 60 people and is expected to create many more jobs in the forest and trucking industry.
The plant will draw on area forest material to make wood pellets, which are a cleaner alternative to coal.
The company plans to occupy the former International Paper site and truck the pellets several miles to the port, then ship by barge on Ouachita River. The pellets are to be mainly exported to Europe.
