Climate Emergency Bike Ride to focus on BP and E.ON, including BP's agrofuel investments and lobbying
Please meet outside the BP head office, St Jame's Square at 10.45 am to welcome the Climate Emergency Bike Ride, organised by Campaign Against Climate Change, which will stop outside BP in protest against their role in agrofuel and tar sands expansion and in humanitarian and environmental crimes. If you can bring banners or placards along, that would be great.
BP is a major investor in Brazilian sugar cane ethanol and directly involved in the destruction of the world's most biodiverse savannah. Sugar cane in Brazil is responsible not just for major biodiversity destruction, but also for pushing other agricultural activities into the Amazon forest, and for the displacement of large-numbers of rural communities. Slavery-like working conditions are widespread. BP prides itself of having been instrumental in formulating UK biofuel legislation. See: www.biofuelwatch.org.uk/docs/BP.pdf . Another focus of the protest outside BP's head office is the company's tar sands investments in Canada. According to the Canadian Indigenous Tar Sands Campaign and other groups "In Canada, oil production from the tar sands emits three times the global warming pollution as conventional oil, requires excessive amounts of energy and fresh water, and destroys huge swaths of boreal forest."
Afterwards, people will follow the cyclists to protest against coal power station plans outside E.On's Head Office and then join the Climate Emergency Rally at 12 noon, Speakers Corner, Hyde Park, also organised by Campaign Against Climate Change. See www.campaigncc.org for more details. "End Agrofuel Use" is one of six key demands of the rally.

Biofuels are a wide range of fuels which are in some way derived from biomass.
