Brazil over 2.6 mln green jobs in 2008: ILO report

Brazil had more than 2.6 million green jobs in 2008, and the country's transition to an economy with lower greenhouse gas emissions can help create such jobs, a report by the International Labor Organization (ILO) released on Wednesday showed.
According to the report "Green Jobs in Brazil: How many there are, where they are and how they will evolve in the coming years," green jobs created by economic activities can contribute to emissions reduction and the improvement of environmental quality.
In 2008, the number of green jobs in Brazil, such as in seedling production management, forest management, recycling and biofuel production activities, was 2,653,059, accounting for 6.73 percent of total formal jobs in the country.
ILO also listed jobs in telecommunications that help avoid emissions from transportation, and in maintenance of electronic equipment, which could reduce the need for manufacturing new ones and increase efficiency, as green.
However, the report excluded the huge number of people working as recyclable materials collectors, because of their lack of social protection and health hazards they are exposed to.
"Although today there is no doubt about the positive role played by these workers in relation to the environment, the fact is that certainly it is not these kinds of jobs that the ILO seeks to promote," the report added.
The ILO also regarded sectors based on exploiting natural resources and advancing environmental quality, such as mining, marketing, building maintenance and use, agriculture, livestock and fisheries, as well as tourism as potential green job generators.
In 2008, these sectors accounted for about 5.8 million formal jobs in the country.
Some may become sustainable if they go through a "greening" of the production and distribution processes, the ILO said.
