BA Agrees Deal To Establish UK Jet Biofuel Plant
LONDON -(Dow Jones)- British Airways PLC (BAY.LN) is to establish Europe's first production facility using waste matter to produce jet fuel, it said Monday.
The plant will convert 500,000 metric tons of waste a year into 16 million gallons of fuel, which will be used topower part of the airline's fleet from 2014, it said, adding that this volume of fuel would be more than twice the amount required to make all of its flights at nearby London City Airport carbon-neutral.
British Airways has signed a letter of intent to purchase all the fuel produced by the plant, which will be built by the Solena Group Inc., a bioenergy and biofuels company based in Washington DC.
The plant is likely to be built in the east of London and should lead to the creation of 1,200 jobs in the area, the company said.

Biofuels are a wide range of fuels which are in some way derived from biomass.
