The Swiss company Addax Bioenergy is planning to acquire up to 20,000 hectares of farmland in north-western Sierra Leone for sugar cane plantations and for an ethanol refinery, in order to meet the European demand for agrofuels.
Over two-thirds of Sierra Leone's population live in absolute poverty and half the population suffers from hunger and malnutrition. Turning fertile farmland into ethanol plantations and using cassava, the country's staple food, for ethanol, will worsen this situation.
Please write to the public-private development and investment funds to which Addax has appealed for funding and call on them not to invest in the project.

Biofuels are a wide range of fuels which are in some way derived from biomass.
