PROTEST AGAINST BIOFUEL POWER PLANT IN PORTLAND

Local campaigners against a planned power plant, which will burn 30,000 tonnes of palm oil each year, will be marching through the streets of Portland to show opposition to the scheme which was approved by the council in January. W4B, the company behind the plant, state they will use palm oil from Indonesia, where growing the crop is causing the destruction of the rainforest, displacement of indigenous people and is pushing animals like orangutans to the brink of extinction. W4B will be receiving millions is taxpayers' subsidies to build and run the plant on the basis that it produces "green" energy even though biofuels, such as palm oil and Jatropha, have been shown to cause massive social and environmental problems in the countries where they are gown.

There is now a large community group called No Oil Palm Energy (NOPE), who are hoping people will join them in a march trough the streets of Portland to the port where this plant will be built. Please bring banners, posters and musical instruments to make this as loud and colourful as possible.
