Re: [Biofuelwatch] Please contact your MEPs before next week's biofuels vote - UPDATE

Hi,

After posting this alert on Wednesday, we were advised that MEPs do actually have the option to vote for the abolition of the biofuel target (i.e. for the deletion of the 10% target for renewable energy in transport which is being implementing almost entirely as a biofuel target).  The amendment with this proposal has been put forward by Sabine Wils on behalf of the GUE/NGL Group, seconded by Keith Taylor.

So you may want to refer to this amendment  when writing to your MEPs, although unfortunately we understand that nothing better than a 5 or 5.5% cap is expected to be endorsed by the European Parliament.

Please note that this amendment was submitted after Down to Earth and ActionAid had put together their email alerts so the information we had from them had been correct at the time.

Best regards,

Almuth Ernsting

Subject: Please contact your MEPs before next week's biofuels vote

As we wrote in our newsletter last week, there will be an important vote on EU biofuels policy in the European Parliament next Wednesday, 11th September.

Sadly, MEPs won't be offered the option to vote for abolishing biofuel targets and incentives altogether.  Their best choice will be for a cap on land/food-based biofuels. However, if they vote against a cap or for a high one, the impacts on forests, people and climate will be much worse than those of the lowest proposed cap.

We would therefore encourage everybody to write to their MEPs before the vote.

Down to Earth have put together background information and a sample letter to MEPs: http://www.downtoearth-indonesia.org/story/urgent-agrofuels-action-write-your-meps (also see here for a full background briefing by Down to Earth, Sawit Watch, Friends of the Earth Europe, Watch Indonesia! and Misereor: http://www.downtoearth-indonesia.org/story/addressing-impacts-eu-s-agrofuels-policies-indonesia).  Please note that this is not a click-on alert but relies on personal emails.

Also, ActionAid has set up a separate 'click on' alert to MEPs, with a shorter message: https://forms.actionaid.org.uk/ea-action/action?ea.client.id=539&ea.campaign.id=21644 .  Please note that if you take part in this then you can personalise your message and, if you like, you can also add more details and information for example from Down to Earth's longer alert above.

Biofuels are a wide range of fuels which are in some way derived from biomass.

Your idea?
