We need to act urgently to stop more CfDs being awarded to biomass power stations, which play a huge role in forest destruction in the southern US.
The Department of Energy and Climate Change will be making decisions on the next round of subsidy (Contracts for Difference or CfD) awards for new renewable electricity projects sometime between now and the end of 2016, but possibly very shortly.
Drax is already on course to burning pellets made from 15 million tonnes of wood a year, yet the UK's total annual wood production is only 11 million tonnes. US conservation NGOs have documented precious biodiverse wetland forests in the southern US being clearcut and turned into pellets which are then shipped to Drax. This is a disaster for forests and for the climate.
Please take a minute to email the Department of Energy and Climate Change to tell them: No subsidies for forest destruction!
