When: Saturday, 22nd October; assemble from 1 pm, speeches from 2 pm
Where: Outside Drax Power Station, near the South Gate
What: Biofuelwatch will be joining Coal Action Network and other climate and environmental activists for a demonstration and celebration at Drax Power Station and we hope you can join us. Together we can #AxeDrax.
Bring your banners, costumes, placards and voices – and make it clear that Drax's greenwashing of biomass has to stop and that the power station must close down. Ending Drax's biomass subsidies will force the power station to shut down. There will be speakers, theatre (a performance of 'Buried Sunshine'), and music - and Veggies Catering Campaign will be attending the protest with burgers, tea and cake.
In 2006, Drax was the site of the first Climate Camp, an important point in the global history of direct action targeting the root causes of climate change. We return to Drax to celebrate what has been achieved in the intervening decade and name the work we still have to do for climate justice – including shutting down Drax and replacing it with genuinely renewable power. Drax continues to burn more coal than any other power station in the UK whilst burning more wood than any other plant in the world. Last year, they burned 6 million tonnes of coal, much of it from Colombia and Russia, where communities suffer human rights abuses and evictions for opencast coal mining. And they burned pellets made from 12 million tonnes of wood - more than the UK's entire annual wood production. Many of their pellets were made from the clearcutting of highly biodiverse southern US wetland forests.
If you can't make it to the demo, you can still take part. Take a photograph of yourself with an #AxeDrax banner or placard and upload it to our Facebook event page, or tweet it with #AxeDrax, @Draxnews, @beisgovuk.
